Rosatom CEO to visit Armenia

Armenia's Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Suren Papikyan had a meeting with Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, which is a Russian state corporation that specializes in nuclear energy.
YEREVAN, September 18. /ARKA/. Armenia's Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Suren Papikyan had a meeting with Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, which is a Russian state corporation that specializes in nuclear energy.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 63rd International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) session in Vienna, Austria, the Armenian ministry reported. It said during a brief conversation, an agreement was reached that Likhachev will visit Armenia later this month.
Likhachev and Armenian authorities are supposed to discuss the process of extending the service life of the Armenian nuclear power plant, as well as to look into future cooperation between Armenia and Rosatom.
Papikyan is in Vienna with the aim of participating in the 63rd session of the IAEA. The ministry said also an Armenian pavilion was opened on the sidelines of the session, which presents the products developed by Armatom research institute to improve the safe operation of nuclear power plants.
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is located some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan. It was built in the 1970s but was closed following a devastating earthquake in 1988. One of its two VVER 440-V230 light-water reactors was reactivated in 1995.
In March 2014, Armenian government decided to extend the plant’s service life up to 2026 because of delay in building a new unit. The service life extension has become possible thanks to Russia’s financial resources. The country provided $270 million to Armenia as a loan and $30 million as a grant.
Rosatom Service JSC, a Rosatom subsidiary, was contracted by Armenia as contractor for the preventive repairs and modernization of the Armenian nuclear facility. - 0--
