YEREVAN, September 18. /ARKA/. A well-known American band Capital Cities will take part in a gala concert in Armenia's second-largest town of Gyumri that will host this year major Independence Day events, slated for September 21. This is the first time that the main events and the gala concert will be held outside the capital Yerevan.
Eduard Aghajanyan, chief of staff of the government, said celebrations will start in Gyumri Central Park, where Yerevan-based bars and cafes will operate in separate pavilions. Seven music venues will be installed in the city center for musicians of different styles - vinyl, rock, electronic music, classical, Armenian folk, pop and jazz music.
On Shahumyan Street, the works by artists and craftsmen representing exclusively the Shirak region will be presented. The Rustaveli Street will host a display of regional crafts in separate pavilions. Gastro pavilions will operate on Abovyan Street. The Vardanants Square will be transformed into a children's town, in which events will be held for children of all age groups.
In the evening, at 19:00, the Vardanants Square will host the gala concert with the participation of famous Armenian and foreign stars, including the Armenian group Supacooks, German DJs Dole & Kom and the American group Capital Cities. The events will end at 23:00 with festive fireworks.
Also a balloon festival will be held with pilots who will come from Russia, Bulgaria, Georgia and Brazil with their own balloons.
Mayor of Gyumri Samvel Balasanyan said after the 1988 earthquake, major events of this magnitude were practically not held in the city. He said Gyumri expects as many as 15 thousand visitors, and all hotels in the city have been booked.
The mayor said the guests who will not find hotel rooms can stay in the locals' houses. Four trains will leave Yerevan for Gyumri on that day starting out at 7:55, 9:15, 9:55 and 12:00. They will leave for Yerevan at 20:25, 21:40, 22:40 and 24:00 - after the completion of all the festive events.
The government has released this year 220 million drams on all Independence Day events, down from 425 million drams released last year.
In 2020, all major Independence Day events will be hosted in the third-largest town of Vanadzor. Then, other regional administrative centers will be hosting the event. The idea is to give boost to development of tourism industry across the country. --0—
