Armenia’s honey production to drop to record-low
YEREVAN, July 20. / ARKA /. Armenia’s honey production this year will drop to record-low one thousand metric tons, twice less than in 2013, according to Telman Nazaryan, the chairman of the National Union of Beekeepers.

Speaking at a news conference at Sputnik international press center today,  he said beekeeping in Armenia in recent years has been in decline, blaming  the low yield on active use of pesticides by the agriculture that causes a variety of diseases in bees.

Nazaryan also said that harmful substances were found in Armenia-produced honey making the European Union ban its sale across its territory.

The chairman of the National Union of Beekeepers also complained of a complete lack of attention and support to beekeeping from the ministry of agriculture.

According to him, Armenia currently has 200,000 bee colonies, each producing from 7 to 10 kg of honey, while in Soviet times each colony produced 30-40 kg of honey.

Nazaryan said in order to offset these negative consequences Armenian beekeepers should focus on export of honey products – such as propolis, bee venom, royal jelly and pollen.

"Armenian honey products are in great demand in Russian Siberia. We are ready to cooperate and we can provide our customers with the necessary amount of e products," he said.

The National Union of Beekeepers was elected in 2014 October to the Board of the Eurasian Union of Beekeepers, which includes about 50 organizations. The Union cooperates also with the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Russia that supplies Armenian beepers with bee medicines. -0-
