YEREVAN, July 19. /ARKA/. Armenia will organize alternative supplies of high-quality rough diamonds to the domestic market, Hovhannes Azizyan, deputy economic development and investments minister, told reporters on Tuesday.   

In his words, the government is taking steps to expand room for supplies of rough diamonds to Armenia.

«There are preliminary arrangements and the best conditions are planned to be ensured before the end of this year for purchasing rough diamonds from Russia,» he said.

Azizyan said he meant first of all diversification of supplies, which will allow purchasing rough diamonds at lower prices and not only from Alrosa Company.

He said that agreements with other companies will lay the groundwork for alternative supplies.

As for the jewelry industry, there are certain problems with branding and hallmarking recognition in the Eurasian Economic Union's space, and 'in this connection we have initiated and put into use a project which will make hallmarks mutually acceptable by the union member countries, and this will facilitate jewelry export procedures significantly.   

According to the National Statistical Service, Armenia's jewelry output grew 49.6% in Jan-May 2017 to AMD 18.8 billion. The country's diamond production grew 73% to 77,492 carats. ($1 – AMD 478.6). --0---
