Armenia to reduce import of milk powder

Armenia will cut on imports of milk powder, deputy minister of agriculture Samvel Galstyan, told a parliament sitting today in response to concerns raised by MP Zaruhi Postanjyan that some local companies are bringing in huge volumes of milk powder from Ukraine at $1.7 per 1 kg, causing serious damages to local farmers who were forced to sell their milk at very cheap price to Armenian dairy companies.

Armenia will cut on imports of milk powder, deputy minister of agriculture Samvel Galstyan, told a parliament sitting today in response to concerns raised by MP Zaruhi Postanjyan that some local companies are bringing in huge volumes of milk powder from Ukraine at $1.7 per 1 kg, causing serious damages to local farmers who were forced to sell their milk at very cheap price to Armenian dairy companies.
According to the deputy minister, the government will work out special measures, including legislative changes, setting higher requirements for imported products, which, he said, would reduce the import of milk powder and encourage growth of local production of liquid milk.
According to the National Statistical Service, production of milk in Armenia in 2014 increased by 6.6% from the previous year to 386.5 million liters. In March 2015 milk production amounted to 72,900 metric tons, an increase of 6 percent year-on-year. The largest producer was Gegharkunik region with 14,000 tons.-0-
