Armenian antitrust agency: no obstacles to banana importing companies
YEREVAN, February 11. /ARKA/. The chairman of Armenia’s antitrust agency denied today allegations about artificial obstacles created for the companies wishing to import bananas to Armenia.

Speaking at a news conference, Artak Shaboyan, the head of the State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC), said the agency was again monitoring the situation at the local banana market, dominated for several years by Catherine Group company, rumored to be linked to the Chief Enforcement Officer Mihran Poghosyan.

"I can say that at this moment there are no obstacles to other companies wishing to enter this market. If there are companies which are able to import cheaper bananas to Armenia, they will encounter no impediments," Shaboyan said.

According to the National Statistical Service, in 2014 some 12,000 metric tons of bananas were imported to Armenia worth over $9 million. The figure was down from almost 9,900 tons imported in the previous year worth over $11 million -0-
