YEREVAN, June 17. /ARKA/. The government of Armenia saved 5 billion drams (about $10.4 million) in road repairs and construction in 2019 thanks to transparent tenders, Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Suren Papikyan said on Wednesday during a government Q&A session in parliament. He said the saved money was spent on construction of new roads.
Papikyan was asked by an MP from the My Step faction Gevorg Papoyan whether this means that earlier the cost of road construction had been inflated to pocket part of the loan funds through various corruption schemes/ The minister noted that a lot depends on the quality of management.
“I don’t want to voice assessments as to where and what kind of corruption mechanisms were used earlier in road construction. Our law enforcement agencies are consistently addressing this issue, and I believe that new disclosures are ahead,” Papikyan said. -0-
