YEREVAN, April 15. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Ministry of Agriculture is ready to provide financial support to Spayka LLC, Agriculture Minister Gegham Gevorgyan told a press conference today, saying also that there are resources for doing so.

Last week Spayka LLC, in response to the detention of its head Davit Ghazaryan on charges of tax evasion, issued a statement threatening to stop procurements of fruits and vegetables from farmers in around 80 communities across the country.

Armenia’s State Revenue Committee (SRC) accused Spayka of evading over 7 billion drams ($14.4 million) in import taxes and asked a court in Yerevan to allow Ghazaryan’s two-month pre-trial arrest.

“We are not looking for new players to replace Spayka. But we always encourage the arrival of new players not at the expense of someone, but simply because it is good for economy," said the minister.

According to Gevorkyan, the government seeks to help double exports and in this context the vacuum in the market is to be filled.

On March 26, Spayka commissioned a $15 million worth cheese factory in Yerevan. The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Armenia’s leading freight and agribusiness company Spayka was founded in 2001. It is Armenia’s leading exporter of fruits, vegetables and some prepared foodstuffs. The company says it has more than 1,200 people on its payrolls. -0-
