YEREVAN, February 2. / ARKA /. Head of an Armenian consumer watchdog has slammed the authorities today for poor control over prices. Speaking at a news conference Armen Poghosyan, head of the Armenian Consumers Union said 'there is a nominal and a criminal rise in prices of basic foods.”
According to him, the nominal rise is caused by serious reasons, while criminal rise results from fraud, ‘when the real price increases without an increase in the nominal price’ which is tantamount to ‘paying for air added to bread, water added to sugar and ice added to poultry.’
He said the Armenian Consumers Union wrote thrice to the president of Armenia and the head of the presidential oversight service suggesting that relevant bodies visit shops to take samples of bread and send them to laboratory check and compare the findings with the figures indicated in invoices. He said the same should be done regarding cooking oil, gasoline and other products.
Poghosyan said examinations conducted by the Union revealed that locally made bread contains up to 30% of air. He said consumers can not reveal these violations.
‘In any case, we will continue to make every effort to get us heard," said Poghosyan.-0-
