Customs checkpoint in Armenian Meghri resumes operations in normal mode
YEREVAN, June 17. /ARKA/. The customs checkpoint in the southern Armenian town of Meghri on the border with Iran is back to normal mode of operation to handle all types of cargo, Armenia's State Revenue Committee (SRC) said in an official press release today.

According to SRC, when transporting all types of goods between Armenia and Iran, it is no longer necessary to reload goods at the checkpoints of the two countries. This requirement was introduced for safety reasons after Armenia declared state of emergency to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The SRC said also that Police are not required anymore to coordinate and control the movement of Iranian freight vehicles  in  the territory of Armenia.

Earlier, Armenian traffic police escorted all trucks bringing goods from Iran until their destinations in Armenia. Also, special points were set up in Armenia to check Iranian drivers' health and to provide them accommodation and other services.

A 30-day state of emergency to curb the spread of coronavirus was declared in Armenia on March 16 and restrictions were imposed on free movement of citizens. The government banned also some types of economic activity. On April 13, the government extended the state of emergency for another month and on May 4 it lifted the ban on almost all types of economic activity and the free movement of citizens, except for public transport. On May 14, the government has again extended the state of emergency for another 30 days.

However, despite the extension, public transport, preschools, trading centers, restaurants and gyms have reopened starting from May 18, and  wearing of masks has become  mandatory in public spaces.

On June 12, the government has extended the state of emergency for another month- until July 13.  Armenia's confirmed cases of Covid -19 have grown to 18,033 as of today morning. Some 302 people died from the infection  and 6,814 patients recovered. -0-
