Expert says why transnational companies do not come to Armenia
YEREVAN, February 4. /ARKA/. A string of international conventions, which Armenia has not ratified is one of the reasons why transnational corporations do not come to the country, Gagik Makaryan, the head of the National Union of Employers, said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"Transnational corporations do not come to Armenia, because they prefer to operate in countries that are more predictable. It is the ratified conventions that make countries more predictable," he said, noting that Armenia has not ratified any international convention since 2006.

Makaryan said if the government takes a step towards international integration, the country will become more attractive to large investors. Another step towards attracting investment is to increase the efficiency of the inspection bodies.

Makaryan denied the opinion that transnational corporations refuse to come to Armenia because of its small size. "They can produce products not only for the Armenian market, but also for the countries of the region. Armenia can provide engineering solutions, and production can be organized elsewhere," the expert said.

He also denied the opinion that Armenia's closed borders with two of its neighbors (Turkey and Azerbaijan) is a reason why these companies do not come to Armenia.

"Countries that quickly deliver goods to the other end of the world create intermediate bases, and Armenia can choose this option," he said.

At the same time, he said it is wrong to place the entire burden on businesses. He suggested that the Armenian government create such bases and logistics centers, including those outside the country. In addition, he noted that the development of transport aviation could be a way out of this situation. -0-
