Freight traffic grew by 5.8% to 3,460,200 tons at South Caucasian Railway in 2012

A total of 3,460,200 tons of freight was transported by South Caucasian Railway in January-December, an increase of 5.8% against 2011, the company’s press service told ARKA Agency.

YEREVAN, January 17. /ARKA/. A total of 3,460,200 tons of freight was transported by South Caucasian Railway in January-December, an increase of 5.8% against 2011, the company’s press service told ARKA Agency.

A total of 491,900 tons of freight was transported by railway for export, an increase of 9.4% as compared to the year before.

Freight transported for imports reached 1,369,800 tons, a 1.4% increase compared to 2011.

A total of 1,598,500 tons were transported by rail inside the country (8.9% increase).

Average weight of freight car grew by 3.8% to 1,541 tons in 2012 against 1,398 tons in 2011.

In December only, a total of 307,100 tons of freight was transported (6.5% increase against December 2011), including 46,300 tons for export (13.2% 
growth), 120,000 tons for import (6.6% growth) and 140,800 tons inside the country (4.4% growth).

The railway is gradually improving its main performance indicators. The progress was made due to complex measures implemented to improve the quality of services, terms of delivery and pricing policy, as well as to increase reliability and reduce loss or damage risks, according to the report.

South Caucasus Railway cjsc is a 100% subsidiary of Russian Railways open joint stock company that is operating Armenian railways under a 30-year concession contract signed in 2008. The contract can be extended for another 10 years. -0-
