YEREVAN, July 4. /ARKA/. Georgia has opened today an alternative road for Armenian vehicles to travel to Russia across its Daryal Gorge, the Armenian Ministry of Emergencies said, adding also that the alternative road will be closed once the overland border crossing at Upper Lars reopens.
The Upper Lars border crossing was blocked on June 23 by a massive mudslide caused by heavy rains, destroying about one kilometer-long section of the road which is actually the only conduit for Armenia to reach Russia across Georgian territory.
The alternative road via Daryal Gorge is only for all-wheel drive passenger cars, according to the Ministry of Emergencies.
According to Georgian authorities, the alternative route will operate in a special mode and under the control of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.-0-
