New type of 'business' emerges in Armenia
YEREVAN, January 17. /ARKA/. The introduction of the demerit point system in Armenia since January 1, 2020, under which a person’s driving license is cancelled or suspended based on the number of points he loses over a period of 12 months because of the traffic offences, has prompted the emergence of a new type of 'business', the local daily 'Haykakan Zhamanak' says in today's issue.

The daily recalls that under the revised Law on Administrative Responsibility, each motorist is given 9 points at the beginning of a year.  If a motorist loses all 9 points within 12 months, he/she will have their driver’s license cancelled for 6 months.

According to the daily, on the Internet one can find ads of people who sell their points for money. For example, one man demanded 585,000 drams for all 9 points. The cost of 1 point ranges from 50- to 65 thousand drams.

The daily called one such person, who revealed the sale scheme in detail saying the price was final.
Thus, in order to buy the points, the buyer must register the seller as the second driver of his/her car and if he/she commits traffic breach, the points will be withdrawn from the seller.

The newspaper asked for comments a member of the Public Council under the Chief of Police Sergey Ghahramanyan, who said the add might be a joke, adding that such announcements would disappear soon. He said if they appear to be true, then the  police would exercise appropriate measures. –0—
