For safety reasons no more than 30 Iranian trucks are allowed to pass through the Meghri checkpoint on the border between Armenia and Iran daily, Health Minister Arsen Torosyan said on Friday.

YEREVAN, April 10. /ARKA/. For safety reasons no more than 30 Iranian trucks are allowed to pass through the Meghri checkpoint on the border between Armenia and Iran daily, Health Minister Arsen Torosyan said on Friday.
"To ensure epidemiological standards, all goods imported from Iran are handed over to the Armenian side in the border zone- from one truck to another, while the contacts between Iranian drivers and accompanying persons are minimized," he said at a hearing convened by the parliamentary committee on health and social issues today.
According to the minister, an exception is made only for building materials because of their large volumes. They include bitumen, clinker and glass, which makes systematic epidemiological checks difficult.
He said when the cargo cannot be loaded to an Armenian truck, Iranian trucks move across Armenia exclusively with police escort. Torosyan stressed that since restrictions had been imposed on traffic between Armenia and Iran, there were no cases of transmission of coronavirus through Iranian drivers.
"We have done everything possible to minimize the contacts of drivers with the local population. The drivers have special designated places along the road to have some rest before going back," the minister said.
Earlier, Armenia closed border with Iran. Only trucks with cargo are allowed to enter the country. Armenian health officials examine the drivers' health condition at the border checkpoint. --0--
