YEREVAN, November 23. /ARKA/. Sergey Valko, the CEO of South Caucasus Railways (SCR), a Russian-run company operating Armenia's railroads, defended today the company’s cargo transportation rates saying they are justified and are being determined by the realities.
According to him, the people who criticize the SCR for setting rates that exceed the same rates in Russia should take into account that the amount of work done by railways in Armenia and Russia are incomparable since the average 24-hour loading in Russia is more than 3 million tons, while in Armenia this figure is only 4,000 tons.
According to him, the SCR is working in extremely difficult conditions connected with mountainous terrain.
"In Russia, the average weight of a train is 7,500 tons, in Armenia it is 1,490 tons. The costs are absolutely different. The rates applied by the SCR can be compared with the rates in Georgia and the difference is very little.
According to him, in Georgia the rates are 13% higher than in Armenia and 39% higher for the transportation of goods from Armenia. In terms of domestic rates the difference is extremely little, he said adding that the company is ready to provide full information on this matter. -0-
