YEREVAN, June 12, /ARKA/. The sudden death of pigs in Armenia’s southern province of Syunik was probably caused by a feed infection, spokeswoman for the Food Safety Service Anush Harutyunyan told Novosti-Armenia news agency, citing the findings of a preliminary study.

The sudden death of pigs was reported on June 6 in the village of Kornidzor. According to a  local resident, quoted by Armenian  mass media outlets, out of 400 pigs in the village only 10 survived. She suggested that the cause of death is African swine fever, which she said was reported in the nearby villages.

"The results of laboratory testing showed that the mass death of the pigs is to be blamed on anaerobic infections, salmonella was also present in the feed. Most likely, the bacteria that penetrated through the feed caused swine disease," said Harutyunyan.

She said the that investigation is currently ongoing, urging residents of the region to keep their pigs far away from each other whenever possible, since the infection can be transmitted to non-infected animals. She also noted that it was  not yet known exactly what  types of food could be a carrier of infection.
Harutyunyan assured that there was  no danger of selling the meat of the infected animals.

“When pigs become infected with similar infections, their death occurs very quickly. Owners have actually no time to kill and sell their meat. Pigs killed by infectious diseases are destroyed,” she said. -0-
