YEREVAN, February 5. /ARKA/. Taxi drivers in Armenia’s capital city Yerevan demanded today that Yerevan mayor Hayk Marutyan resign because of ignoring their problems.
A taxi driver, Emil Sahakyan complained in front of the Yerevan Municipality that taxi drivers are penalized due to the lack of parking areas for taxis. The amount of a fine for parking in the wrong place is 5,000 drams (about $10).
‘The mayor does not provide parking areas for taxis, while the road police penalize us," said the taxi driver, who said he had received 20 tickets in the last month. He said the municipality announced the creation of 100 new parking areas for taxis, but they all were provided by ex-mayor Taron Margaryan.
Taxi drivers are dissatisfied with the amount of the fine, which, in their opinion, does not correspond to the Armenian reality. They demand that the tickets issued after the “velvet revolution” be written off, and that they have their man in the mayor’s office to deal with their problems.
“Before the parliamentary elections in December, we were told that the red lines (paid parking spaces in the capital’s streets), as well speed and other cameras would be eliminated. Today the mayor is only talking about building kindergartens and schools. If these promises are not fulfilled, then all taxi drivers will hold on Thursday a protest in front of the government building," said another taxi driver Edward Arshakyan. -0-
