YEREVAN, December 14. /ARKA/. The United Nations Organization is implementing a two-year program of development of economic activities of socially vulnerable women in Armenia’s provinces, UN Representative in Armenia Dmitry Maryasin said Thursday at a conference focused on economic opportunities for women in the South Caucasus.

The program costs $600,000. It is a part of the general program “Development of Economic Activities of South Caucasus Women”.

The program is being financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and being implemented by UN Women organization in cooperation with UNDP in Armenia.

The main goal of the program is to provide poor and socially isolated women with wide opportunities for engagement in economic activity.

The essence of the program, Maryasin said, is to help weak and vulnerable women in Armenia’s provinces to accomplish as professionals, to establish businesses and improve their economic capability. In his words, consulting in job search and business establishment will be provided to women. The program will assist them in training, search of business contacts and their unification into communities, where they will become able to open businesses together.

It is difficult for women in rural areas to open businesses because of the lack of awareness and resources, he said pledging them support.

Maryasin said that the program is planned to be implemented in Lori, Shirak and Gegharkunik provinces.

The program beneficiaries will be searched for through women’s clubs, non-commercial organizations and other organizations and through the wide network of female leaders, which operates for already several years as part of the UNDP project “Women in Local Democracy”.

Maryasin said that the organization will be searching for women having potential, desire and interest, but having no support.

The approach consisting of three components will be applied here.

First, poor and socially isolated women will obtain the skills, economic opportunities and the information necessary for self-employment.

Second, appropriate legislative and political initiatives will be worked out and used which will create opportunities for economic development of women.

And third, the government and state-governing agencies will work out and implement programs related to gender problems.

The program is expected to reduce gender inequality at Armenia’s labor market and favorable environment will be created for putting women’s untapped economic potential into practice. -0---
