Upper Lars still closed for all types of traffic

YEREVAN, June 29. /ARKA/. The Upper Lars checkpoint on the Georgian-Russian border is still closed, the Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported today morning.
"The Stepantsminda-Lars road is closed to all types of vehicles," the ministry said in a statement, citing Georgian and Russian emergency authorities.
The only overland road connecting Armenia and Russia via Georgia passes through the Upper Lars checkpoint. It has been closed since Sunday due to the danger of rockslides and mudslides caused by erosion of the Terek River.
Such situations at the Upper Lars checkpoint happen throughout the year when landslide block traffic along the mountain serpentine. In winter, the road is often closed because of snowfalls.
Dozens of Armenian trucks with exported products, including perishable fruits and vegetables, have been idling near the checkpoint for days already. -0-
