Yerevan brandy company to buy 35,000 tons of grape this year

The French-owned Yerevan Brandy Company (YBC) will buy this year the record 35,000 tons of grapes, YBC chief executive officer, Ara Grigorian, told a news conference today. The previous record was set in 1998 when it bought 32,000 tons, he said.

In 2012 the company’s output grew by 25% from 2011 to 3.5 million liters of brandy against 2.7 million liters produced in 2011. Production grew by 27 percent from July 2012 to February 2013. Mr. Grigorian described this growth as ‘huge’ saying it translates into one liter of additional brandy.
Ara Grigoryan said the products of the company account for 18-19% of the domestic market.
"They account for 30 percent of three-and five-star brandies, for 65 percent of premium brandies , and for 97 percent of super class brandies. He said the largest demand is for brandies costing less than 3000 drams.
The Yerevan Brandy Company was founded in 1887. In 1998 it was sold to French Pernod Ricard at $30 million. -0-
