Zvartnots airport in Yerevan reached its capacity limit

YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/. Ninety flights take off and land every day at Zvartnots international airport in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, Armenian Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Gnel Sanosyan said in parliament on Wednesday. He added that the facility has actually reached the limit of its capacities.
"Infrastructure and other changes may be needed to serve more traffic," Sanosyan said. He noted that passengers can fly to as many as 45 destinations around the world from Yerevan and the country's second-largest town of Gyumri, with 20-25% of them being served by Armenian airlines, compared to 2.5% in 2018.
"Virtually one in four arriving or departing passengers use Armenian airlines, which is a pretty good indicator. Last year, 500 new jobs and nine new destinations were added in the industry," Sanosyan said.
In January this year the management of Zvartnots airport offered a $350 million project to expand the airport's capacity. In November 2022, ACI EUROPE director General Oliver Jancovec urged the Armenian Government to approve the planned expansion Zvartnots international airport , as it's reaching its capacity limits.
ACI EUROPE is the European region of Airports Council International (ACI), the only worldwide professional association of airport operators.
ACI EUROPE represents over 500 airports in 55 countries. Its members facilitate over 90% of commercial air traffic in Europe. Air transport supports 13.5 million jobs, generating €886 billion in European economic activity (4.4% of GDP).
In response to the Climate Emergency, in June 2019 its members committed to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions for operations under their control by 2050, without offsetting.
Zvartnots International Airport located 10 km west of the capital Yerevan is run by Armenia International Airports CJSC, owned by Corporación America of Argentinean entrepreneur Eduardo Eurnekian. -0-
