Armenian government will do whatever necessary to ensure at least 10% growth to agriculture sector in 2011, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said Thursday at the cabinet ministers’ regular meeting.
YEREVAN, February 17. /ARKA/. Armenian government will do whatever necessary to ensure at least 10% growth to agriculture sector in 2011, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said Thursday at the cabinet ministers’ regular meeting.

At this meeting, the government approved a barley cultivation program and import of seeds.

Some 2,000 tons of seeds are planned to be imported from Ukraine and provided to farmers as government assistance.
“The agriculture ministry singled out those farms in need of assistance, and we will give them high-quality seeds for nothing,” the premier said. “These seeds will be imported from Ukraine and Russia.”

This program will be implemented under the control of heads of provincial administrations and governors.

Sargsyan said that as many as 14,000 farms would receive governmental assistance.

“It is not a secret that areas under crops are shrinking from year to year,” he said adding that this program would contribute to efforts to stop this contraction.

The prime minister didn’t rule out that extra 1,000 tons may be imported if demand exceeds 2,000 tons. -0-
