Anti-trust body of Armenia to strengthen the control over production and prices of eggs on the eve of Easter

YEREVAN, April 12. / ARKA /. State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition of Armenia set control over the egg market on the eve of Easter Day.
Before the New Year in the Armenian egg market an unprecedented increase in prices for eggs was registered, in some cases, from 55-60 to 140 drams a piece. Producers explained this deficit in the market by an insufficient number of laying hens.
As a result of administrative proceedings, the State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition fined Lusakert poultry to 100 million drams for the abuse of dominant position and creating an artificial shortage in the market of eggs on the eve of New Year holidays.
"Studies of SCPEC indicate that each year in connection with Easter there is an increased demand for chicken eggs in the country. To prevent abuses by economic entities, the Commission decided to determine daily supervision over the activities of economic entities in the meeting on Tuesday”, states the information.
The Commission requests information from economic entities operating in the country on indicators of production, sales volume, available balance and sales prices on a daily basis. In the case of price changes, economic entities must provide appropriate justifications. The Commission will also require information from the largest supermarkets regarding the delivered amounts of eggs by producers.
Monitoring Group of the Commission continues daily observations in retail trade points, paying particular attention to the trade market of hen eggs.
The chairman of SCPEC Artak Shaboyan announced that he is excluding the possibility of an abrupt rise in prices for eggs on the eve of Easter (April 24).
There are six major entities in the Armenian market of egg production - "Yerevan Poultry”, “Poultry Factory Lusakert", "Arzni Pedigree Poultry Plant", "Arax Poultry," "Poultry Ashtarak" and "Lusakert Factory “Harutyun", which together occupy 95% of the market . The share of the factory "Lusakert" is 26.06%. ($ 1 - 374.31 drams). -0-
