YEREVAN, September 16, / ARKA/. Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan attended today the opening of the new passenger terminal of international Zvartnots airport in Yerevan.

The event was also attended by top clergymen of the Armenian Apostolic Church, an Argentine Armenian businessman Eduardo Eurnekian, the owner of Armenia International Airport that runs Zvartnots.

A total of $160 million were invested in the construction of the terminal which began in October 2008. The 34,000 square meter complex includes new arrival and departure halls, VIP-halls, a new parking area on 20,000 square meters.

Now Zvartnots can handle up to 3 million passengers annually, against 1.1 million previously. The number of tables for passenger check-in, equipped with modern CUTE technology, has been increased from 21 to 46. The terminal provides international safety standards, it has an X-ray and automatic photocopiers, as well as a system of centralized heating and air conditioning.

This is the largest facility built in Armenia over the past 20 years. Its construction was forced by sharp rise in passenger traffic. The building has a 9-point earthquake resistance. Ensuring uninterrupted communications with the outside world in case of emergency is one of the purposes of upgrading the airport.

Armenia International Airports runs Zvartnots airport in accordance with a 30-year concession granted by the Armenian government in 2001. The owner of the company is a New York-based holding company, in which 100% is owned by Eduardo Eurnekian. –0--
