YEREVAN, November 21. /ARKA/. The Union of Architects of Armenia said today it will take all possible measures to block the construction of a multi-storey Persian Tower in downtown Yerevan.
Speaking at a news conference the chairman of the Union, Mkrtich Minasyan, said the authorities want the tower to be constructed on a land plot between Moskva cinema house and the building of the Union of Artists of Armenia. According to him, the land plot formerly belonged to the Union of Artists, but since the 90s has been resold several times and now is owned by an Iranian company Tidas International.
"Regardless of who owns this plot the construction of a high rise building in that area would completely destroy the architectural integrity of the center of our city," said Minasian.
He said the Union of Architects is ready to ask the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and the National Assembly to block the decision, as well as initiate a public debate on this issue.
Minasian expressed hope that the municipality of Yerevan after electing a new mayor will reconsider the previously issued permit and will prohibit the construction of the Persian Tower.
"I am also encouraged by the chief architect of Yerevan, who has so far refrained from assessing the Iranian project, as this issue needs to be discussed," Minasian said. -0-
