Armenia's GDP drops by 6.8% in first half of 2020

Armenia's GDP in the first half of 2020 dropped by 6.8% compared to the same period in 2019, according to figures, released today by the National Statistical Committee  (NSC).

YEREVAN, September 9. /ARKA/. Armenia's GDP in the first half of 2020 dropped by 6.8% compared to the same period in 2019, according to figures, released today by the National Statistical Committee  (NSC).
It said the total GDP in the first half of 2019 stood at 2.723 trillion drams, dropping to 2.539 trillion drams in the first half of 2020.

The largest decline was recorded in the second quarter. For comparison, the GDP in the second quarter of  2019 was worth 1.481 trillion drams, while in the same time span of this year it slashed by 14.2% to  1.270 trillion drams.

Armenia introduced state of emergency on March 16 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.  It has been extended five times for a month. The latest extension ends on September 11. 

Restrictions on free movement and some types of economic activity introduced on March 24 were removed on May 4. Public transport, gyms, kindergartens and catering facilities were allowed to resume on May 18 and on August 12, Armenia allowed the entry of foreigners and holding of meetings and rallies, but wearing masks and observing social distance remain mandatory.

As of today morning, there were 45,152 confirmed cases of coronavirus; 905 people have died from COVID-19 and 41, 5032 people have recovered.-0-
