Armenian antitrust agency to monitor situation in healthcare area

The Armenian State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition will monitor things in healthcare area, particularly in pharmaceutics, the commission’s press office reported on Friday after its chairman, Artak Shaboyan, met with his Russian counterpart, Igor Artemyev, in Moscow.

YEREVAN, October 11. /ARKA/. The Armenian State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition will monitor things in healthcare area, particularly in pharmaceutics, the commission’s press office reported on Friday after its chairman, Artak Shaboyan, met with his Russian counterpart, Igor Artemyev, in Moscow.
At their meeting, the heads of the two countries’ antitrust agencies discussed some widespread abuses in drug sales in CIS countries. Very often doctors prescribe particular drugs to their patients and send them to particular pharmacies or distributors. As a result, doctors receive certain rewards from pharmacies or drug distributors. Artemyev said that this phenomenon has already become commonplace in Russia.
He also told Shaboyan that doctors also send their patients to particular hospitals for medical examination to receive certain percentage of profit from hospitals for every patient.
The problem of competition at the medicaments market and widespread abuses here were discussed at the meeting as well. --0----
