YEREVAN, February 3. /ARKA/. The Armenian government plans to increase the share of SME in the overall GDP to 40% in 2018 from the current 27-28%, economy minister Karen Chshmarityan told a news conference today.

According to him, in the past year the number of companies which received government support increased, while the number of newly- founded companies exceeded the number of shutdown companies.

"The liberalization of small and medium businesses is the main task of the government," the minister said.

According to the ministry of economy, in 2015 there were 15,946 officially registered business entities and 9,862 were shut down.

Chshamrityan said companies open and shut down and there is nothing surprising in it. The closure of companies is linked with dozens of factors, including poor management, disagreements between shareholders, the emergence of new players in the market and others.

"If we see ourselves as a market economy, we will have companies open and close. But the government's goal is creation of a favorable business environment, helping win new foreign markets, removing obstacles and fighting against corruption,' said the minister.

"Sales of products is a separate profession. Producers and consumers must be prepared to yield part of their profit to mediators,’ the minister said.

In 2015, the government provided 5.4 billion drams worth support to 225 new and operating small and medium-sized companies at the rate of 10%. Also farms were provided with 100 million drams worth machinery via leasing.  ($ 1 491.78 drams). -0-
