YEREVAN, June 29. /ARKA/. The Armenian government on Thursday approved a set of legislative amendments that provide for an increase in the permitted volume of water release from Lake Sevan by about one and a half times.

The governments wants to increase the water release for irrigation purposes from the current 170 million cubic meters up to 240 cubic meters in 2023.

It says that the amendments are prompted by the desire to mitigate water shortage and increase its availability in the irrigation systems fed from Sevan-Hrazdan derivative system.

The lake stretches over 70 km from north-west to south-east and its surface area is almost 1.500 sq km.
