YEREVAN, September 26. /ARKA/. Armenian Nuclear Power Plant will be brought to halt for a regular annual repair, the press office of the Armenian Energy and Natural Resources Ministry reported on Friday.
According to the report, the plant will cease operating on September 27, and the repair will last 46 days.
The Armenian Metsamor nuclear power plant is located some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan. It was built in the 1970s and started operating in 1980, but was closed following a devastating earthquake in 1988.
One of its two VVER 440-V230 light-water reactors was reactivated in 1995. Specialists say the plant can operate until 2016, but the European Union insists on closure.
On September 3, 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after meeting with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan that Russia’s Rosatom and Armenian specialists arranged for implementation of a project aimed at prolongation of the plant’s operation for 10 years until 2026. --0----
