YEREVAN, February 1. /ARKA/. An Armenian opposition lawmaker warned today that the critical situation in the agricultural sector is fraught with ‘explosion.’ Nikol Pashinyan from the Armenian National Congress (ANC) said because of difficult socio-economic situation in the country and global trends the critical situation in the domestic agricultural sector is being aggravated by the failure of thousands of farmers to repay their loans.
He said this situation has created problems with banks, including the persons acting as guarantors.
"The situation is difficult, even explosive, and I propose that the parliament convenes a special hearing to discuss the problem," said Pashinyan.
He was backed by parliament speaker Galust Sahakyan who described the problem as ‘serious’ saying Pashinyan should ask a relevant parliamentary committee to organize the hearing.
According to Armenia’s National Statistical Service, the economic activity index in 2015 increased by 3.1% from 2014. Last year, according to official data, Armenian agricultural output increased by 11.7% from 2014 to more than one trillion drams. ($1 – 488.75 drams).-0-
