YEREVAN, November 30. /ARKA/. Construction of a new building in the place of the demolished Youth Palace in Yerevan may kick off in spring next year, chief architect of Yerevan Narek Sargsyan told journalists Thursday.

Twenty-floor building of the Yerevan Youth Palace situated on a picturesque hill and having won an architectural award was privatized by Avangard Motors company, official distributor of American-German Daimler Chrysler, in January 2004. The building was then demolished in 2004 as it did not meet the existing international standards.

Chief Architect of Yerevan said the construction is delayed because the Japanese project that won the tender a couple of years ago, envisaged construction of two buildings of 150meters and 90 meters high respectively.

“At the time, Yerevan Municipality gave a permit for construction, but changed the planned height to 122 meters and 70 meters respectively. The contractor refused to agree with the change”, chief architect said adding that the municipality is against construction of very tall high-rise buildings in the city.

The international tender for a design to build a business center in place of the demolished youth palace was held in Yerevan in January 2010. About 1,145 architects from 71 countries (including Russia, Japan, Armenia, USA, France, Greece, Spain, Italy, and Germany) participated in the tender.

“Currently negotiations are on to change the construction standards required by designers. I hope that we will manage to reach certain agreements in winter and to start construction works already in spring,” chief architect of Yerevan said. –0--
