YEREVAN, May 19. /ARKA/. The need for the speedy formation of a single gas market of the Eurasian Economic Union is felt especially in Armenia, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Tuesday at a video conference of a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Council.

"In the context of the global economic challenges that we all face today, we need the earliest possible formation of a gas market, which is particularly pointed in Armenia," Pashinyan said.

He said he has repeatedly noted that a single energy market with non-discriminatory principles of operation should become one of the bases for integration into the EAEU. Pashinyan also said that without it qualitative progress in integration processes is impossible and that it is impossible to ensure equal conditions for economic activity for all members of the union without it.

"We proceed from the fact that in the strategic directions of the development of Eurasian integration until 2025 the principle of applying common approaches to prices and tariff setting on the EAEU common gas market, including uniform tariffs for services rendered to natural gas monopoly entities during transportation and transit, should be fixed," Pashinyan said.

He noted that the EAEU should strive to achieve this goal step by step, which will create favorable conditions for a qualitatively deeper economic integration within the framework of the union.

Earlier, the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission announced that the price setting for gas transportation services on the EAEU common gas market will be decided at the level of the heads of state of the Union.

Eurasian Intergovernmental Council Chairman Mikhail Myasnikovich said on April 23 at an extraordinary meeting that several discussions have been also held on this issue, but an agreed decision was not worked out.

It is planned that at the next meeting on May 19, the heads of state of the Union will approve the Strategic directions for the development of Eurasian economic integration until 2025.

On March 31, Armenian Vice-Premier Mher Grigoryan, on behalf of the Armenian government, sent a letter to Alexey Miller, the head of Gazprom Holding, with a proposal to start new negotiations on changing the price for the gas supplied to Armenia. It is also planned to discuss the issue of setting payment for gas in national currency.

The vice-premier’s initiative was determined by the impacts of the coronavirus on the economy, taking into account forecasts and the situation with energy resources on world markets, including the situation with oil and gas prices.

On January 1, 2020, Russia’s Gazprom Holding kept the gas price for Armenia (at the border) at $ 165 per 1,000 cubic meters for the coming year.

Meanwhile, the Armenian subsidiary of Gazprom - Gazprom Armenia CJSC - applied to the Public Services Regulatory Commission on April 1 with a request to revise the price for natural gas provided to Armenian consumers. --0--
