Opposition MP: fuel price rise in Armenia economically not justified

YEREVAN, November 15. /ARKA/. Garnik Danielyan, an opposition Armenian parliament member from Hayastan (Armenia) bloc, lambasted Tuesday the government for allowing oil traders to pick the pockets of of ordinary consumers, saying the rising prices of oil products and liquefied natural gas are economically unjustified.
"Over the past months, without any economic reason, fuel prices have been rising in our country. The cost of liquefied natural gas has increased from 160 to 220 drams. At the same time, a liter of premium gasoline has grown to 570 drams. This testifies to the lack of control in this sphere," the MP emphasized.
According to the opposition lawmaker, the Competition Protection Commission should have dealt with this issue first of all. In early October, the State Commission for Protection of Competition argued that the rise in gasoline prices in Armenia could be conditioned by the growth of fuel prices abroad, as well as by the change of the US dollar exchange rate.
According to the National Statistical Committee, gasoline price in October 2023 compared to October 2022 was up 8.6%, while diesel fuel price was down by 11%.
At the same time, gasoline price was 6.3% up in October compared to September, while diesel prices was up by 7.1%. In October this year compared to December last year, gasoline and diesel prices rose by 25.5% and 0.4%, respectively. -0-
