YEREVAN, February 11. /ARKA/. Armenian prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan told a Cabinet session today to accelerate the major repair of the 48.3 kilometer long Arpa-Sevan tunnel that takes the water of Arpa River to Armenia’s largest lake Sevan.

The prime minister stressed that the tunnel has been under repair for too many years reducing the amount of water that should flow into the lake.

"The full repair of the tunnel will allow the delivery of 250 million cubic meters of water to the lake per year, which will in turn solve irrigation problems,’ Abrahamyan said.

In early 2015 a senior official of the nature protection ministry Artashes Ziroyan said the major repair of the Arpa-Sevan tunnel would be completed in two years. The repair is being handled by Armenian company Arpa-Sevan. The total cost of the repair is 11.8 billion drams, of which over 6 billion drams have already been utilized.

The repair began in September 2010. After the repair is over the level of water in the lake  is supposed to rise by 20 centimeters a year.

Lake Sevan, one of the largest alpine lakes in Europe and Asia, is located in the heart of the Armenian plateau, at an altitude of 1,914 meters. The lake stretches over 70 kilometers from northwest to southeast. Its water surface area is nearly 1500 square kilometers.

The lake is the main source of drinking water in the region. The water level in the lake will be raised to the optimum 1,903.5 meters by 2030.  ($1 - 495.86 drams). -0
