YEREVAN, May 29. /ARKA/. The procurement price for natural milk in Armenia should be raised to 140 or 150 drams per one liter, Deputy Agriculture Minister Samvel Galstyan said Friday in the Natianl Assembly.

In his words, the ministry has discussed the matter taking into account complaints about too low procurement prices for milk in the country and has come to conclusion that the prices should be raised from the present 90-100 drams to 140-150 drams.

Galstyan said the prices depend on fat content in milk and season, and difference in prices may range between 20 and 30 drams. In his words, the ministry will keep close watch on prices.

He said the inspections conducted in some provinces, where the minimum price has already reached 140 drams per one liter, found out singular irregularities, which will be eliminated.

Lawmakers described things in some communities to the deputy minister. They said the procurement price is lower than the set minimum there and Galstyan promised to consider all these cases.

He also stressed that the Union of Milk Producers will be established before June 10 for protecting their interests.

In early May, Babken Pipoyan, chairman of the Informed and Protected Consumer, said that too low procurement prices for milk threaten the country's food safety, since farmers gain nothing from milk production and their business is unprofitable.

According to the National Statistical Service, Armenia's milk output grew 6.6% in 2014 to 386.5 million liters.

Some 72,900 tons of milk were produced in March 2015 (6.1% year-on-year growth).

Gegharkunik province accounted for the largest milk output in the country in March 2015 – 14,000 tons were produced here over that month. ($1 – AMD 478.54).  ---0-----
