YEREVAN, October 21./ARKA/. A number of American businessmen requested the US authorities to expel Russia from the WTO or to remove trade preference for Russia ahead of time, Izvestiya reports referring to its source at the US trade representative office (USTR), according to Prime.
A number of business associations said at a public hearing on WTO preferences that Russian falls short of its commitments and should be expelled, said Cecilia Klian, USTR Senior Director for WTO Accessions.
The associations are unhappy about Russia’s support to local producers and steel producers in particular, despite Russia’s promise that state-funded companies will be maintaining a competitive environment, according to the report.
American-Russian business council, as well as some business associations (AISI, SMA, TIA, PhRMA) complained Russia has not joined the WTO agreement about public procurements yet.
Businessmen also reminded about Russia’s statement during the WTO-accession talks that it will not introduce import limitations. Yet, in August 2012 Russia applied a temporary import quota for some kinds of pipes that will be in force at least till November 2014. –0--
