Beirut blast kills three ethnic Armenians and injures another 100

The massive explosion that rocked the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday evening, leaving dozens dead and thousands injured, has killed also three local ethnic Armenians and injured about 100, according to the press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan.

YEREVAN, August 5. /ARKA/. The massive explosion that rocked the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday evening, leaving dozens dead and thousands injured, has killed also three local ethnic Armenians and injured about 100, according to the press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan.

"However, these numbers, unfortunately, may rise, since there is a large number of missing persons," she wrote on her Facebook page.

Naghdalyan said that the destruction in the Armenian-populated quarter and throughout Beirut is massive: buildings collapsed, churches were damaged, and the building of the Armenian Haykazyan University was also damaged.

"At the moment, together with our colleagues, we are considering and evaluating various scenarios for providing the fraternal people of Lebanon with targeted assistance and first-aid aid," she added.

According to local authorities, the explosion was caused by the detonation of 2.7 thousand tons of ammonium nitrate confiscated by customs in 2015, which were stored in the warehouse. 

Mourning has been declared in the country. In the city, recognized as a disaster zone, a state of emergency was introduced for two weeks. According to the latest data, more than 100 people became victims of the explosion, the number of injured people exceeded 4 thousand.

Armenia's Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan tweeted he was shocked by the terrible news of Beirut  blast and its devastating  consequences. 

'Our thoughts and prayers are with the brotherly people of Lebanon. Armenia is ready to urgently provide assistance to Lebanon and its people. Beirut glory will definitely be restored,' he wrote -0-
