Criminal proceeding instituted against 20 radical oppositionists after clash with police

A criminal proceeding has been instituted against the leader of Armenian Tseghakron party and his nineteen supporters who took part in the clashes with the Police in downtown Yerevan Tuesday, the press office of Armenia’s Police reports.

YEREVAN, November 6. /ARKA/. A criminal proceeding has been instituted against the leader of Armenian Tseghakron party and his nineteen supporters who took part in the clashes with the Police in downtown Yerevan Tuesday, the press office of Armenia’s Police reports.
Twenty supporters of Shant Harutyunyan, the leader of Tseghakron small party, who tried to hold an unauthorized march on Mashtots Avenue in downtown Yerevan, were taken to the police station after clashes with law enforcement officers, the police said in a statement.
The police said armed with batons Harutyunyan’s supporters decided to hold an unauthorized march on Mashtots Avenue and refused to obey their order not to disturb the public order. In response the demonstrators threw makeshift firecrackers on the ground.
The clash involved several hundred demonstrators and one hundred police officers. Yesterday thirty-eight people were taken to the police station after clashes with law enforcement officers, twenty of them were detained and the eighteen others will be called as witnesses.
According to the report, several police officers received injuries and four were hospitalized. None of the detained was injured.
A criminal proceeding was instituted for using violence against representatives of the authorities or threatening violence and for criminal damage to property using widely dangerous means.
The offenders may face big penalties, arrest for up to two months or jail for up to four years.
The batons and makeshift firecrackers are sent for examination. The investigation is under way. –0—
