Russian military base officer dies in car crash in Armenia

An officer of the Russian military base in Giumry of Armenia died Sunday night in a car accident, the press office of Armenian ministry of emergencies reported.

YEREVAN, June 3. /ARKA/. An officer of the Russian military base in Giumry of Armenia died Sunday night in a car accident, the press office of Armenian ministry of emergencies reported.
The accident happened in Bulvarni district of the city, near the radio factory. A BMW drove off the road and turned over under circumstances not known yet. Senior lieutenant Atavin died on the way to hospital, according to the report. Investigation is under way.
The 102nd Russian military base has been located Armenian Giumry city since 1995. The military base is part of a joint air defence system of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). There are 5,000 Russian soldiers officially reported to be stationed at the 102nd Military Base.
In August 2010, the Russian-Armenian agreement about the military base signed in 1995 was extended for another 49 years (from 1995). -0-
