U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT INTENDS TO APPOINT NEW U.S. CHARGE D’AFFAIRES IN ARMENIA

28.06.2007, 05:24
The U.S. Embassy’s press service reported that Perina will assume these duties on July 10, 2007. In this position he will replace U.S. Vice-Ambassador to Armenia Anthony Godfrey.
YEREVAN, June 27. /ARKA/. The U.S. Department of State has asked Ambassador Rudolf Perina to come out of retirement and fill the position of the U.S. Charge d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Armenia.

The U.S. Embassy’s press service reported that Perina will assume these duties on July 10, 2007. In this position he will replace U.S. Vice-Ambassador to Armenia Anthony Godfrey.

As a career diplomat, Perina has held many important positions, including Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade (1993-1996), Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs (1996-1997), Minsk Group Co-Chair and Special Negotiator for Nagorno-Karabakh and Eurasian conflicts (1998-2001), Deputy Director of the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning staff (2004-2005).

The press service also reported that Ambassador Richard Hoagland remains President Bush’s nominee for the position of the U.S. Ambassador to Armenia.

“We continue to await Senate confirmation of Ambassador Hoagland’s appointment,” the U.S. Embassy said.

U.S. President Bush nominated Richard Hoagland’s candidacy to be approved in the U.S. Congress, despite the candidate’s refusal to recognize the massacre of the Armenian people in the Ottoman Turkey as Genocide of the Armenian people.

In September 2006, the voting on this issue was stopped in the U.S. Senate due to the efforts of the Armenian lobby, Senator Robert Menendez.

The Armenian community of the USA speaks against Hoagland’s candidacy, as he refused to recognize the fact of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey in 1915. L.M. –0--
