YEREVAN, June 4, /ARKA/. Hayk Babukhanianm, chairman of the Constitutional Right Union party, said today Armenia should move to take advantage of Turkey's reinforcing confrontation with Israel in order to step up the campaign for a broader recognition of the Armenian genocide.
According to him, angered by Turkish prime minister Tayyip Erdogan’s anti-Israeli statements, Israel may in retaliation consider recognition of the Armenian genocide.
On Monday Israel troops raided on a pro-Palestinian flotilla of aid ships killing 10 people, most of them Turkish citizens, and arresting some 600, who were later set free under the growing international pressure.
Speaking at a news conference Hayk Babukhanian said Armenia’s pro-active foreign policy of the last two years has given a fresh weight to the Armenian genocide factor, and that Israel may use it to blackmail Turkey.
“Armenia must not miss this chance and move quickly to boost its relations with Israel and urge it to recognize the genocide... It is the most convenient time now and there is a good pretext to revise our relations with Israeli,’ he said.
Israel and Turkey were traditional allies but ties took a downturn in 2009 when Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
condemned Israel's offensive in Gaza, in which some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.
