National security council secretary describes seismic safety level as satisfactory

The secretary of Armenia’s National Security Council, Arthur Baghdasarian, described today the national seismic safety level as satisfactory.
YEREVAN, July 17, /ARKA/. The secretary of Armenia’s National Security Council, Arthur Baghdasarian, described today the national seismic safety level as satisfactory.
Speaking at a press briefing after a recurrent session of the Council, he said there are nonetheless some concerns regarding the introduction of more modern seismic safety systems.
Armenia has 150 surveillance points across the country, which need to be modernized and equipped with effective devices. According to Baghdasarian, a relating program has been designed to be implemented within the frameworks of seismic safety development concept approved today by the National Security Council.
‘Once we implement the planned reforms Armenia will become the most safe country in terms of seismic security in the region,’ he said.
Armenia’s National Seismic Service cooperates actively with colleagues from the USA, Russia, France and some other countries.
The Caucasus and Armenia are located in a seismically very active zone. According to the statistics, some 458 earthquakes were registered in Armenia in 1991-2008 with the magnitude above 3.5 points. The country survived four major quakes in the last century-in 1926, that hit Gyumri, in 1931 and 1969 when the southern region of Syunik was struck and the devastating 1988 earthquake. The latter caused $12 billion worth damages killing, according to official numbers, 25,000 people and leaving homeless some 500,000 people. -0
