YEREVAN, December 27, /ARKA/. Armenian agriculture minister Gerasim Alaverdian, nominated for the post by Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) party, has been recalled, party chairman Arthur Baghdasarian, who serves as secretary of the National Security Council, told a news conference today.
The post of agriculture minister was given to Orinats Yerkir by a power-sharing agreement that was signed after the 2088 presidential election by the Republican Party and its junior coalition partners -Orinats Yerkir, Bargavaj Hayastan (Prosperous Armenia) and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF). The ARF has quit the coalition earlier this year.
According to Baghdasarian, the decision to recall minister Gerasim Alaverdian was made by the party’s political council December 26 after a consultation with president Serzh Sargsyan. The new minister will be appointed in January, he said, adding that there are several candidates to take up the vacated posts, but declined to name any.
Under the power-sharing agreement, coalition members have the right to nominate and recall their Cabinet members.
Orinats Yerkir has three ministerial portfolios in the current government –those of transport and communications, agriculture and emergencies. Armenia media was rife with speculations about the minister’s imminent resignation. Speaking at a December 24 ) news conference Gerasim Alaverdian denied them all. -0-
