YEREVAN, December 27. /ARKA /. Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan called on Armenia mass media today to be unbiased and objective in their reporting as he met with chiefs of local media outlets to wish them a happy New Year.
In a short speech he described the outgoing year as effective for mass media, saying it was remarkable in terms of a sound political discussion with active participation of mass media. In his words, many mass media outlets managed to fulfill their mission with dignity and did not become an instrument for solution of some issues. He then wished that Armenian journalists had more courage in voicing high-profile issues of public significance.
“I view this courage as a criterion to make judgments not only about your professionalism but also as a criterion to judge about the maturity of our society. I would like to reiterate that we are not intending to cover the existing problems in the governance system and our society and in this sense we need your support,’ he said.
President Sargsyan said also that everyone must propagate political tolerance, mutual respect and encourage dialogue between various and even incompatible (political) forces. He said lies, provocations and labeling hinder dialogue.
‘An integral and serious picture of our current realities is also the chronicle of our country. In this sense your objective and quick reporting are important not from the present but also future perspective,’ he said.-0-
