Forty-nine Armenian army dodgers were convicted last year, a deputy prosecutor general, Aram Tamazian, said today, speaking at a meeting of top senior prosecutors.

He said another 461 Armenian males who were wanted by law-enforcement bodies for dodging military service turned in to the authorities. He said 510 males bought last amnesty by paying 483 million Drams.
Under a law, passed by Armenian parliament which first took effect in 2004 and was then extended, army dodgers can avoid criminal prosecution in exchange for a fee depending on the number of years they have spent on the run.
The maximum fine was set at 1.8 million drams ($5,000) per person. According to government data, more than 5,000 Armenian men have bought amnesty since then. -0-
