President: presidential election held properly and in line with the country’s international commitments
YEREVAN, February 20. /ARKA/. Yesterday’s presidential election was held properly and in line with the law and the country’s international commitments, Armenian President Robert Kocharyan said in his statement issued on Wednesday.
Presidential press office says that Kocharyan expressed gratitude to all the members of election commissions, proxies, observers and voters.
“This was an important test for democracy in our country”, he said.
“Elections have always constituted the epicenter of political controversies and can escalate tension and split the society. However, the ability to suffer decent defeat in political contest is an important part of democratic culture”, Kocharyan said.
He said every citizen should realize that Armenian president can’t divide people into “friends” and “strangers”.
“I am convinced that Serge Sargsyan, the president elect, will be able to consolidate the community and create the atmosphere of mutual understanding and tolerance”, the president said.
The head of state said that despite great achievements, Armenian still has plenty to do. He said that Armenian people hadn’t used its capacity yet and the country has room for further development.
“Armenian must become the most competitive country in the world and be reckoned among fastest-growing countries. Consolidation and consistent work are needed for that”, he said.
Armenian Central Election Commission said after looking through 100% of ballot papers that Prime Minister Serge Sargsyan, who is the leader of Republican Party of Armenia, has won 52.86% of votes.-0-
