US state department congratulated Armenia on elections

US State Department Spokesman Tom Casey made a statement on Armenian presidential elections congratulating the Armenian people in connection with the active and competitive presidential elections held on February 19.
YEREVAN, February 25. /АРКА/. US State Department Spokesman Tom Casey made a statement on Armenian presidential elections congratulating the Armenian people in connection with the active and competitive presidential elections held on February 19.
Casey referred to the preliminary assessment of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, as well as the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly claiming that the elections were mostly held in conformity with the standards of fair elections set by the OSCE and the Council of Europe. Casey also pointed to the essential problems observed in the process of elections, meanwhile stressing that the election bodies positively responded to the demand to recalculate the votes.
The State Department Spokesman urged the Armenian authorities to ensure transparency of the recalculation process, examine all the reported inaccuracies and work hard to improve the future elections in the country. Casey also urged all the political forces of Armenia to ensure supremacy of law, act peacefully and with great responsibility for the sake of Armenia’s democracy.
Nine contenders were running for the February 19 presidential elections. According to the preliminary results of the Central Electoral Commission, Prime Minister Serge Sargssyan, Chairman of the Republican party of Armenia won in the first round with 52.86% votes.—0—
