YEREVAN, August 2. /ARKA/. MP Alen Simonyan elected to Armenia’s new parliament in the June 20 early elections on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party’s ticket was elected today as Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly.

The head of the Counting Commission Narek Babayan said 71 MPs took part in the voting, who unanimously endorsed Simonyan’s candidacy

Earlier on Monday, the opposition Hayastan (Armenia) and Pativ Unem (I Have Honor) alliances walked out of the session room boycotting debates on the candidacy of the speaker nominated by the majority.

Opposition MPs previously nominated the arrested mayors of Meghri and Sisian Mkhitar Zakaryan and Artur Sargsyan for the post of vice-speaker.

Both were elected to the parliament on opposition’s ticket. Opposition MPs demanded that MP Knyaz Hasanov from Civil Contract who chaired the maiden meeting of the parliament ensure the presence of candidates at the sitting, citing National Assembly’s regulations. The latter said that it was not in his competence.

Armenia’s National Assembly comprises the Civil Contract party, which won 53.91% of the votes (71 seats), the Hayastan (Armenia) bloc (29 seats), and the Pativ Unem (I have Honor) bloc (7 seats).

The parliament consists of 107 lawmakers, down from 132 in the previous parliament.

Hakob Arshakyan (former minister of high-tech industry) and Ruben Rubinyan (former chairman of the standing committee of the National Assembly on foreign relations) are set to become two vice-speakers from the majority faction. -0-
